What is the best silage film?

The best silage film 2025 is the one that meets all requirements: The ideal silage film is characterized by easy handling, high UV stability, elasticity and extreme oxygen density. It not only protects the forage from spoilage and fungal toxins, but also from reheating and nutrient loss.

In combination with sandbags for sealing, you get efficient silage production. This results in less waste and significantly better feed quality, which reduces costs – especially due to the reduced need for concentrates.

What should the best silage film be able to do?

It should:

  • be easy to handle
  • have a high UV stability
  • be elastic and resilient
  • be extremely oxygen-tight
  • Protect forage from spoilage and contamination with fungal toxins
  • Protect forage from reheating and nutrient loss
  • Reduce pH values in the upper layer more quickly
  • Minimize silage waste in edge and surface layers

Cover up as quickly as possible!

Easier said than done! Most people look forward to silage driving every year until it comes to covering the silo. This method will make covering up easier for you.

Barrier films: Because a single layer of our barrier films is completely sufficient, you can skip the extra step of using an underlay film. In addition, thanks to the low µ-value, the barrier films adapt exceptionally well to the silage material—similar to underlay films—while still being thick and robust enough to be walked on safely.

With or without underlay?

With a sensible covering system, the best silage film definitely does not need an underlay film. However, if you are unsure, you can rely on the increased protection of a barrier underlay film in combination with a PE main film.

A silage film won’t do you any good without it.

the right silage protection as well as the right silage additive. Because that is at least just as important for a top silage result. Click here to find out more!

Oxygen impermeability in silage film – that’s the key!

  • Fungi and yeasts are not exposed to oxygen during storage and cannot multiply. As a result, the silage remains much more stable after opening
  • Stable silage is richer in nutrients and healthier
  • Stable silage contains fewer mycotoxins
  • Elastic, supple, gas-tight and strong at the same time

How much µ must your silage film have?

Many people still believe that the µ number (thickness) makes the best silage film. However, this is not quite correct! The dart drop value is much more important. This indicates how resilient the film is before it gives up the ghost. Basically, the dart drop value can be explained as the amount of force required to pierce a silage film. A 200µ film with a dart drop value of 400 can therefore be significantly weaker than a 50µ film with a dart drop value of 1000.
