Milk replacer – a matter of quality

Whole milk is natural, but its quality and nutrient content can vary. In addition, hygiene standards are not always easy to maintain. Milk replacers offer several advantages in these aspects – provided the quality is right. In the calf’s stomach, whole milk forms curds as the protein denatures. The calf can digest these well and absorb the nutrients they contain.

Proof of quality

And this quality is the focus of our mymom® milk replacers – and we can demonstrate this with the following test results. The quality of the skim milk portion in the milk replacer is examined, from which further conclusions can be drawn. Clot formation is an important indicator of protein quality and digestibility. If skim milk is exposed to high heat during production, it is damaged – and with it many other important nutrients. In our test, we compared two commercially available milk replacers with a high declared quality and around 50% skim milk content with our premium product mymom® pur 55. Mixing was carried out according to the respective instructions. Rennet was then added and the mixtures were heated in a water bath to simulate the processes in a calf’s stomach.

In the subsequent comparison of the samples, the differences between the products became visible: sample A developed a yogurt-like consistency, and sample B turned into a lumpy, soft mash. The mymom® pur 55 sample, on the other hand, was almost completely solidified – without losing any liquid (see photo).

Heat causes damage

These results show how strongly high temperatures affect the quality of raw materials and thus digestibility. It also becomes clear that many nutrients are heat-sensitive and easily destroyed. Furthermore, it shows that the proportion of skim milk is by no means a quality criterion.

Although the label does not reveal how the raw materials are processed or sourced, it should be said that both comparison samples are from well-known manufacturers. It also demonstrates how close our mymom® milk replacer is to natural whole milk – only with certain advantages.
