The film is placed loosely on the silage material so that it can form a fermentation gas cover and adapt to uneven areas of the silage surface. The CO₂ produced during fermentation creates suction and draws the film tightly onto the silage. Pulling the film tight increases the risk of damage caused by walking on it and can later lead to the formation of air channels.
For optimum protection, silage protection grids and silage bags should always be used around the edges and as cross barriers for weighting down the film. Better protection against micro-perforations caused by bird beaks and claws is provided by the OXY Protec silage protection fleece. The film is available in various sizes.
