Experience report SiloSolve MC

Sometimes things turn out differently than expected. A customer on the Lower Saxony side of the Elbe with 350 cows became interested in SiloSolve FC for the first time in 2021. Previously, he had used another silage additive in grass. Maize was not treated, because it “ensiles on its own”. Shortly before the first cut, he asked which dry matter (DM) range SiloSolve MC would be suitable for. He had planned a DM content of 30% for the first cut. “That fits well,” was our answer.

The second cut was harvested on top of the first one, and in September, when the silage was opened, a sample was sent to the laboratory. The analysis showed a DM content even below 30%, namely 25.4%. Crude ash was, as expected, slightly too high at 11.2%, and the material was quite high in fiber, with NDF and ADF both at the upper end of the target range. Despite the difficult conditions, the ensiling process was very good: pH 3.9, NH₃ only 5% (of crude protein), butyric acid not detectable. SiloSolve MC did its job. This year, the farm is considering using an additive in maize as well, then SiloSolve FC.
