Why?

In recent years, customers have occasionally reported issues with silage films: mold formation and even water ingress, although the films initially appeared intact. After extensive testing, it became clear that tiny holes in the film were often the cause. In many cases, these issues were linked to bird activity—sharp claws penetrating even thick films despite additional protection with silage protection nets. This led to a clear conclusion: silage films need better protection. With the OXY Protec Premium fleece, an effective solution was developed. It is made from very strong polypropylene staple fibers, making the material highly durable and resistant to a wide range of environmental influences. It contains no adhesives or chemical binders, making it ideal for use in feed-related applications.

Practical sizes & easy handling

The fleece is available in practical sizes of 6 × 12.5 m and 6 × 100 m, making it easy to handle and adaptable to any silo size. Individual sections can be joined using protec Tape Ultra, which features an acrylic adhesive with excellent resistance to water and aging.

Fleece – the all-rounder

Fleece materials are used in many different fields, including agriculture. A new and innovative application is as a cover for silage. OXY Protec Premium Fleece is more than twice as thick as conventional covering fleece, making it strong enough to withstand even the sharp claws of birds, cats, and rodents. Unlike typical bird protection nets, its soft surface is gentle on sensitive films.

The sustainability factor

OXY Protec also performs exceptionally well when used to cover straw bales—probably the most well-known application for fleece. Thanks to its water-repellent properties, it protects bales from rain while remaining breathable and conforming closely to their shape. If the fleece is damaged in one spot due to mechanical impact, the material is strong enough to prevent further tearing. With proper handling, OXY Protec can be used for silage over several years and later repurposed for bales. Beets and grain also benefit from OXY Protec: they are reliably protected while still able to “breathe,” reducing the risk of mold growth. Finally, it is also ideal for covering manure. In many regions, covering manure is mandatory. Often, old silage film with holes is used for this purpose. However, such film is not breathable and promotes rotting of the heap. In contrast, OXY Protec supports the desired composting process.
