jbs progas ferm b – specialised silage additive with selected Lentilactobacillus buchneri

Application recommendation

Problems with stability mainly occur in silages with high dry matter contents and insufficient compaction. Uneven filling can also lead to mould pockets because thick layers (over 40 cm) cannot be sufficiently compacted. After opening, we recommend securing the silo face against air ingress, for example with an air barrier made of silo bags. For feed-out, we recommend the highest possible removal rate. These points of silage management should generally be observed, even when using stability-improving silage additives such as progas ferm b. When chopping, we recommend: the drier the silage material is, the shorter the chop length should be selected.

jbs progas ferm b can be used in any type of energy crop. The dry matter content should be above 30%. Silages with lower dry matter contents require very low levels of contamination and sufficient sugar for fermentation so that fermentation can succeed. The drier the forage, the shorter the chop length must be (maize 4–6 mm) and the more carefully it must be compacted. At dry matter contents above 50%, there is a risk that too little residual water is available for bacterial activity, which leads to reduced effectiveness.

FAQs about jbs progas ferm b silage additive

jbs progas ferm b is a biological silage additive specially developed for biogas silages with a dry matter content from 30%. It contains a heterofermentative bacterial strain that produces lactic acid in addition to acetic acid for pH reduction, thereby preserving nutrients. Through acetic acid, it effectively inhibits harmful microorganisms such as moulds and yeasts, improving the aerobic stability of the silage.
jbs progas ferm b is particularly suitable for silages with a high dry matter content (from 30%), such as maize and other energy crops. It is ideal for use in biogas silages, as it improves stability at the feed-out face and reduces nutrient losses.
The recommended dosage is 0.5 g per tonne of silage material. One 500 g sachet is therefore sufficient for treating 1,000 tonnes of fresh matter. Add the powder to at least 1.5 l of cold water and shake/stir for ≥ 30 seconds. Add to the dosing tank, fill up and apply with the appropriate amount of water. Use the solution within 2 days.
The use of jbs progas ferm b leads to improved fermentation, reduces dry matter losses, and increases the aerobic stability of the silage. More nutrients in the substrate means more gas per tonne of silage.
