Data from 37,851 calved cows were analyzed.

Health in the first 10 days: key to successful lactation

Let’s keep it short: 76% of all health problems in cows after calving occur within the first 10 days. In these cases, the milk loss over the entire lactation is also the highest – on average 350 liters per cow. In addition, there are costs for medication, veterinarians, extra labor, and milk discarded due to antibiotic treatment. Furthermore, the risk of getting sick again increases significantly the earlier the first disease occurs. There is therefore only one goal: healthy cows from the very beginning!

Cows must stay healthy after calving!

This is not that easy: when cows become sick after calving, they often already had problems during birth. Delivering twins or experiencing severe pain and claw problems after calving are common reasons why they do not immediately resume good feed intake. Over-conditioned animals and cows from the third lactation onward, which give birth to a large calf while starting with very high milk production, also belong to the risk group.
A cow producing 40 liters of milk per day achieves a metabolic performance comparable to a human walking 80 km per day, according to Dr. Katrin Mahlkow-Nerge.

What can you do if a cow becomes sick after calving? Propylene glycol and niacin (vitamin B3) can help prevent excessive body tissue loss. High initial doses of live yeast stimulate the rumen and encourage the cow to start eating again. Vitamin D3 supports the overworked liver, which is under extreme strain due to the high demands of calcium and glucose metabolism. At the same time, it plays an important role in the cow’s weakened immune system.

Act quickly after calving

It makes sense to provide the cow with supplements containing these ingredients directly after calving and within the next 2 to 4 days, as well as in cows that are not eating well due to any illness and need a “restart”. Especially in a cow sick after calving, this is crucial. The safest method is controlled oral administration using a drench bottle, as not all cows will voluntarily consume these products.

Our recommendation

orgacell sc start gets the cow “back on track” when she is sick after calving. It specifically supports metabolism and promotes rapid recovery.

There are many reasons why the cow’s metabolism becomes unbalanced. The cow usually reacts with reduced feed intake. Especially a cow sick after calving is particularly vulnerable. Starting with the biggest physical “event”, calving, there are risks in early lactation such as milk fever, ketosis, or acidosis. A disruption in this start phase usually affects the entire remaining lactation negatively.
But also later in lactation, for example displaced abomasum, infections, or lameness lead to reduced feed intake, poor general condition, and therefore lower performance.

How should you act after calving so the cow stays healthy and does not become sick?
